In recent years, online therapy has become widely used and gained even more popularity during the pandemic. Before the pandemic, online therapy was used in situations where access to mental health services was limited, when someone preferred to remain anonymous at the beginning of therapy, or when people didn't know what type of therapy they needed and wanted to establish initial contact with specialists over the internet. However, during the pandemic, online therapy became more common than traditional therapy due to quarantine measures, curfews, and the importance of social distancing. The effects of online therapy are supported by scientific research. Studies show that the online environment does not prevent the establishment of a strong and supportive relationship between the client and therapist, and it is just as effective as in-person sessions. The increase in communication through technology-driven distance therapies can trace its roots back to Sigmund Freud. Freud used letters to communicate with his clients.
Benefits of Online Therapy
The Process of Online Therapy
The process begins when the psychologist and client meet via video call applications. Session durations are typically 45-50 minutes, the same as in-person sessions. Sessions usually occur once a week or every 10-15 days. The structure of sessions, the techniques used, and the outcomes of online therapy are not different from face-to-face therapy.
Effectiveness of Online Therapy
In a study conducted at the University of Zurich, clients who received online therapy showed slightly better results than those receiving face-to-face therapy. In follow-up checks after three months, the group that received online therapy had a significantly higher rate of complete recovery. After six months, those who underwent online therapy showed greater improvement in symptoms compared to the group that received traditional therapy. According to a study conducted in Canada, patients who received online therapy had similar recovery and satisfaction rates as those who received face-to-face therapy. Additionally, the cost of online therapy was found to be about 10% less than traditional therapy (Collie, Mitchell, & Murphy, 2000).
